Premiere of “Doppelt Anders” in Hannover

January 9th, 2007

Last night was the premiere of “Doppelt Anders” (Doubly Different), the documentary I directed. Since the film was financed in Hannover, that’s where the first showing was. All the gay and lesbian protagonists of the film were there too. They had never seen the movie before and were exceedingly nervous. They didn’t seem to remember most of what they had said or revealed about themselves in front of the camera. And considering half of them aren’t out to their parents, some of the still struggling with their religion or their cultural background (Poland, Russia, India, Holland and Turkey) they were extremely brave to be part of this project.Luckily they all were relieved and grateful after they saw the film, so Jutta and I didn’t have any tomatoes thrown at us when we got on stage to answer questions afterwards.

2046

January 5th, 2007

2046-1
I just rented 2046! What an amazing movie! I hear it’s the kind of film people either hate or love. In fact a few of my friends already hated it.I think it’s amazing.Apart form the visual language, which is mind-blowing, I really got into the fragmented story. The plot (of what’s there that could be called a plot) revolves around a man, who writes a sci-fi novel, using the women of his life as characters.
2046-2

There’s not much more to it. Things in the movie just sort of happen, often randomly, they don’t necessarily fit together, people come and people go without ever really being introduced…… in a way it’s how live and espceally love is. It just happens. And then it stops again. And there doesn’t seem to be a way of ever really making too much sense of it. So we’re in for the ride and get to enjoy the colors.

Altman Dies

November 28th, 2006

I just found out that Robert Altman died. That sucks bricks in a major way! Somehow the news reached me with a delay, as I don’t have a tv anymore and I hadn’t read the New York Times, which I receive via email, for several days.

Robert Altman

Well, here’s to a big inspiration! To a man who’s work often tickled me. Here’s to Short Cuts, California Split, Gosford Park and Nashville… Here’s to Lily Tomlin, Elliott Gould and huge casts… Here’s to never-ending shots, to brilliant imrovisations and to films that seem to have no script, but are amazingly plotted. Thanks, Mr. Altman.
