Trailer - An Island of Animal Feed
Malformed, six-fingered, protruding foreheads, pointy snouts. What are these creatures?
Over a sequence of still and moving images, and a disorienting, otherworldly soundscape, a disembodied voice, borrowing excerpts from The Island of Dr. Moreau and Shelly’s Frankenstein, describes a series of uncanny half humans, wondering what they are, where they came from, and who created them.
Then the narration begins to fracture.
The voice glitches, language liquefies, sentences - and images - turn into ever more grotesque but fascinating muck: An analogy for AI generated junk-art, as well as literal slop.

AI was central to the making of the 10 minute video installation An Island of Animal Feed, both as a creative tool, and as the subject of an artistic investigation about slop (aka Animal Feed). We implemented Adobe Firefly Video to create animated images of director Florian Sachisthal by photographers Joachim Baldauf, Vince Barone, Nik Dimopoulos, Rainer Elstermann, Olaf Haase, James Kaliardos, Ulrich Lindenthal and Bernhard Musil.

The project does not deal with AI alignment or safety. Instead it focuses on AI and art: its failures, its aesthetic possibilities, and the role of human imagination in transforming machine-generated material into meaningful work. We recognise the irony of using AI to critique AI, but believe that engaging directly with the technology (keeping it close, like an enemy) and seeking to understand it, is essential to examining its place in contemporary art.

We used vague prompts to generate images and videos, selecting those with uncanny mistakes, beautiful deformities and unexpected distortions, then feeding them back into the machine for further iterations while deliberately resisting its attempts to correct their imperfections. Developed over three years, the project had to continually adapt to the radical and often astonishing speed of AI's evolution.
